New Publication: “Women and Political Violence during the Years of Lead”
The Advisory Council on Human Rights has published the study on “Women and Political Violence during the Years of Lead in Morocco”.The study, conducted by Ms. Nadia Guessous during the IER's mandate, aims to document the detailed life stories of women who have suffered at the hands of the state during the period known in Morocco as the years of lead. The qualitative study was conducted in two stages: a first stage of team formation, interviews and focus groups in different regions (Figuig, Nador, Al Hoceima, khenifra, Imilchil, Laayoune, Rabat and Casablanca) and a second stage of analysis of documents generated by the field study.
The analysis could account for different patterns of violence undergone by women during the years of lead. Like men, women were kidnapped, illegally detained, interrogated, tortured even before their children; pregnant women did not benefit from any protection; women were humiliated. The study tackles a system of gender-based humiliation that included methods and practices such as forced nudity, lack of access to sanitary requirements during menstruation...
